The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university located in Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. UCT was founded in 1829 as the South African College making it the oldest higher education institute in South Africa. It is jointly the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest extant university in Sub-Saharan Africa alongside Stellenbosch University which received full university status on the same day in 1918. Faculties offer two kinds of undergraduate scholarships: Faculty Entrance Scholarships, and Faculty Scholarships.The offer of a Vice Chancellors Scholarship replaces all faculty scholarships as it is also an Entrance Scholarship and the same general conditions apply that are outlined below.The number of these awards is limited.Awards are made on the criteria detailed below.There is no application process for these awards.Faculties make awards using the information provided in applications for admission and academic achievement in the previous year.Faculty Entrance Scholarships are awarded to applicants on the basis of NSC achievement in open and redress pools. For Faculty Entrance Scholarships, redress is determined by an applicant’s disadvantage factor.Faculty Scholarships are awarded to returning students on the basis of academic achievement in open and redress pools. For Faculty Scholarships, redress is determined by self-declared racial identity. (No disadvantage factor is available for 2017 returning students.)An applicant or student who is entitled to staff fees will have the record of the award noted on his or her transcript but the amount paid into the fee account will be a pro-rated percentage of the standard award.

General conditions applicable to Faculty Entrance Scholarships

Faculty Entrance Scholarships are for undergraduate students who are applying to enter the University for the first time, and are for the first year of academic study.Except in the BAS and in the Performing and Creative Arts where audition and portfolio rankings are considered, Faculty Entrance Scholarships are guaranteed to applicants who attain the published faculty threshold levels.Eligibility for Faculty Entrance Scholarships is restricted to South African citizens and to South African permanent residents.A Faculty Entrance Scholarship may be withdrawn entirely if a recipient cancels his or her academic registration before writing mid-year examinations (recipients who cancel the registration after writing the mid-year exams will receive half the scholarship value).Faculty Entrance Scholarships are valid for the year in which the offer is made. Applicants deferring their studies will need to meet the published threshold level for the year in which they register. Faculties may roll over an Entrance Scholarship offer for applicants who take a ‘Gap year’.A small portion of the faculty’s allotted amount for Faculty Entrance Scholarships is set aside to be awarded at the dean’s discretion and may be used for awards to international applicants.

General conditions applicable to Faculty Scholarships

Faculty Scholarships are offered to students in their second or third year of undergraduate study. (Some Faculties also make awards for subsequent years of study.) Faculty Scholarships are tenable for one year.To be considered for a Faculty Scholarship, a candidate must be registered for a full curriculum workload for the specified programme/qualification, and may not have failed a course within the programme for which he/she is registered.While minimum levels of academic achievement, as defined by each Faculty and for academic programmes as specified will apply, Deans may exercise discretion when making scholarship awards taking into account a candidate’s academic record, circumstances and the advice of selection panels and heads of academic departments, as appropriate.Faculty Scholarships may be withdrawn if a recipient fails to register at the University for the year in which the scholarship is awarded, changes his or her programme registration to another Faculty, or cancels his or her academic registration before writing mid-year examinations (recipients who cancel registration after writing the mid-year exams will receive half the scholarship value)

For more information on this please see this link The College developed into a fully-fledged university during the period 1880 to 1900, thanks to increased funding from private sources and the government. The main teaching campus, known as Upper Campus, is located on the Rhodes Estate on the slopes of Devil’s Peak. This campus contains, in a relatively compact site, the faculties of Science, Engineering, Commerce, and Humanities (except for the arts departments), as well as Smuts Hall and Fuller Hall residences. Upper Campus is centered on Memorial Hall, the location for graduation and other ceremonial events, as well as many examinations. The original buildings and layout of the Upper Campus were designed by JM Solomon and built between 1928 and 1930. Since that time, many more buildings have been added as the university has grown. Upper Campus is also home to the main library, The Chancellor Oppenheimer library which holds the majority of the University’s 1.3 million volume collection. In 2017, 4 874 international students studied at UCT from 111 countries. Of the total student population, 2 321 are from SADC countries: Angola, Botswana, Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. LIFE ON CAMPUS

In 2017 UCT was home to 28 185 students (6 753 living in the residence system). Around 4 200 new first-years are accepted to study at UCT every year. There are more than 100 student societies active on campus, including academic, faith, national, cultural, political and special interest societies. Students can also choose from almost 40 sporting codes, which include a variety of disciplines from fencing and jiu jitsu to hockey, rugby, and rowing. The Jammie Shuttle service, UCT’s free transport system, makes almost 200 000 trips each year, transporting students and staff to and from the university’s campuses. UCT Libraries is a repository of approximately 1.3 million print volumes, which are kept on 53 349 linear meters of shelves.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduate Certificate Study To confirm eligibility for admission to an undergraduate certificate study, applicants must consult the Admissions Office or the Faculty concerned.

Undergraduate Diploma Study

The minimum requirement for admission to undergraduate diploma study is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree Study

To be eligible for admission to degree study, applicants need to meet minimum requirements for eligibility:

Applicants holding a South African National Senior Certificate need to pass a minimum of four subjects at a rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better from a designated list of subjects. Minimum language proficiency

All applicants must have attained a certain level of proficiency in English and are required to submit evidence of this, as outlined below, as part of their application to study. UCT language policy in respect of South African Senior Certificate undergraduate applicants

South African Senior Certificate undergraduate applicants to UCT must have achieved a pass of 40% or more on the Higher Grade in English (First or Second Language) at Senior Certificate level.

South African National Senior Certificate undergraduate applicants to UCT, must have achieved a rating of 2 (Elementary Achievement, 30-40%) or better at Home Language or First Additional Language level.

UCT language policy in respect of applicants holding non-South African school-leaving certificates

A pass in the English language at A-level, As-level, IGCSE, GCSE or O-level, International Baccalaureate or a level equivalent to any of those listed here.A score of at least 570 (for the paper-based test) or at least 230 (for the computer-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The score must be obtained no more than five years prior to application.A recent overall band score of 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no individual element of the test scoring below 6.0.

Calculating Admissions Points Score (APS)

The percentages achieved in National Senior Certificate examinations (preliminary and final examinations) will be allocated an admission score equal to that percentage. The sum of six subjects, excluding Life Orientation, but including English and any required subject(s) for the relevant programme, is considered when deciding on admission. (For example, for a given programme where Maths and Physical Sciences are required, we will take scores for English, Maths, Physical Sciences and the next best three subjects other than Life Orientation to compute the NSC score towards the APS.) Results below 40% for any subject do not attract a score.

Submitting results and documents

Current learners at school should ensure that all examination results from Grade 11 until September of grade 12 are submitted. Failure to submit these results may result in delays. Transferring students should ensure that all transcripts and academic records are submitted as early as possible and that a final transcript of current studies being undertaken reaches the Admissions Office as soon as possible after receipt.
