Citizenship Education
RCHS intends to cultivate the understanding and practices that sustain individual self-determination and community self-government. Citizenship is an essential component of Raleigh Charter High School’s instructional philosophy. The school’s goal is to teach and model the building blocks of citizenship within the school schedule and curriculum. One way of working toward this goal is their Community Work Day Program. The design includes teacher and student choice, a multiage grouping of students, one-year commitments and experience, and education in up to four service areas during a student’s high school years.
Special Days
As we all know that students learn more when they are active, social, and creative learners. The special days are Flex Days and Ex Days. Flex Days are one of the key innovations of RCHS that allow teachers and students to explore topics in depth, and often across disciplines. These Days occur once each semester over two successive Fridays during which regular classes are canceled. Examples of Flex Day activities include visiting classes at local universities; touring museums and historic sites, often with a special guide and focus; an election program featuring campaign panels of national, state and local candidates and their campaign managers from Democratic, Republican, visits to Raleigh’s Hindu and Buddhist Temples; etc. Ex Days occurs six times per year. They extend the usual 45-minute class period to 90 minutes, so that students meet in periods 1, 3 and 5 on Thursday and then periods 2, 4 and 6 on Friday, allowing the teachers to do in-depth labs, rehearsals, seminars, practices sessions or group work.
